Patio Project

One of the first projects we wanted to do as a married couple was build a patio on the back of our house. Nate did all the work, with some help from the experts at Heavener in Souderton. We used Rinox Morocco Beige pavers for a more rugged look. To balance and complete the look, we built a pergola above it.

We rented a kubota one weekend in May to dig out the foundation for the patio, which had to be at least 8 inches deep to be below the frost line. While we had the kubota, we also dug out trenches and laid pipe to drain water out to the road. Once the foundation was dug, we moved stone into the hole, and rented a compactor to make the stone as flat as possible. This process, although time-consuming and labor intensive, is supposed to be extremely important. If you cut corners on this part, you could end up with a cracked patio a few years down the line. (At least that's what we were told!)

The Kubota makes quick work of digging!

Once the hole was dug, we filled it with stone.

The compactor vibrates to force the stone to settle as tightly as possible into the hole.

Nate cemented the pergola poles into the stone
(no easy task!), then our pavers were delivered.
The next part of the project was laying the stone. Rinox pavers are larger and heavier than typical pavers, so this made the job a little harder. But we thought the look was work the extra work. After taking a class at Heavener, Nate spread out the sand thinly over the stones, using 1-inch pipes to make the surface perfectly level. Then it was time to lay the pavers. We didn't use a pattern, so Nate fit the pavers in wherever. The Morocco Beige set came with 4 different-sized pavers. After all the pavers were set, we swept polymeric sand between the cracks, and it slowly hardened after we wet it down.

One side of our yard was higher, as you can see, so we needed to make a wall on that side.

The wall pavers are larger than the flooring ones

Nate worked nights to get it done as fast as possible

Making good progress...

On the edges, you nail down rubber tracking.

We were able to borrow this diamond-blade saw for cutting the pavers.

To match the rounded wall, we gave this side a rounded edge as well. It gave it a softer look.

The pavers are all in place and the wall is finished. We were anxious to start using the patio.

So that we could use that patio at night, we strung some pretty lights from the pergola.

The landscaping around the patio was the finishing touch on this summer-long project.
