Silas crawled for the first time on his own yesterday! It was an exciting and joyful experience for Nate and me. We have been helping him learn to crawl by first positioning him up on hands and knees, then showing him how to move his arms and legs. For a while the arms have been moving without the legs, so after a few paces he would collapse. But yesterday the legs finally followed the arms!
We apparently had the wrong strategy for motivating him. We’d been using various toys to entice him to crawl, but the object that finally got him moving was my Bible! I read it in morning while I’m eating breakfast, and Silas is always trying to grab it. Yesterday I left it sitting on the floor, where Silas noticed it and immediately sprung into action! I guess this means he’s attracted to things he’s not allowed to play with!
For those of you close to us, you know that by his first birthday, Silas still wasn’t crawling. So to get a head-start on the issue, we had Early Intervention come out and do an evaluation on him. They recommended occupational and physical therapy…and after just four weeks, Silas is able to crawl!
It seems like Silas may simply have low muscle tone, which is slowing his progress on the gross and fine motor skills. We won’t know for sure if there is a larger problem at play until he’s older. But we are so encouraged with his progress so far!
